The Department operates several inpatient facilities that provide psychiatric, rehabilitative and nursing care services to its clients.
In addition, the Department contracts with a private provider, Appalachian Regional Healthcare in Hazard, to provide 100 psychiatric beds for psychiatric assessment, evaluation and treatment 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on an as-needed basis.

Psychiatric Hospitals
These programs provide acute, inpatient psychiatric care for adults who are mentally ill. Many patients are referred through the CMHCs when it has been determined that community services/facilities are not appropriate.

Intermediate Care Facilities for Persons with Mental Retardation (ICF/MR)
These programs are designed to provide specialized, intensive training to reduce the debilitating effects of mental retardation through skill training and behavior management.

Nursing Facilities or Intermediate Care Facilities (ICFs)
These programs provide long-term medical care for mentally ill persons who also require treatment or supervision of the mental illness. Criteria for admission is inpatient status in other state-operated facilities.

Forensic Psychiatric Hospital
This maximum security facility provides pre-trial forensic evaluations to determine mentally ill individuals' competency to stand trial and provides inpatient treatment for individuals convicted of felony offenses who are tranferred from other institutions within the Corrections cabinet.
Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center
Residential Substance Abuse Program
This is a twenty-four hour, thirty-day residential facility located on the grounds of Western State Hospital. It provides inpatient services for chronic and acute alcoholics.
